University of Jos Registrar Begs ASUU members to Suspend Strike

University of Jos registrar, Mr. Jilli Dandam, has urged the members of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU to call off their strike which they commenced on the 22nd of October.

Dandem brought to the association’s notice the strike was no longer necessary because the university had paid allowances to over 90 per cent of ASUU members.

Dandem reminded them that as soon as the University got the notice of the strike action, they underwent the necessary steps to make sure all issues were rectified.

Immediately we got the notice for the strike, management initiated moves to settle all the issues in dispute and I am glad to tell you that we have met 90 per cent of the requests. So, we expect that ASUU should reciprocate the gesture of the management by going back to classes,” he explained.

The registrar also made it known that the management have tried as much as possible to have a discussion with the lecturers but these attempts have been rebuffed.

“All attempts to have a roundtable discussion with Academic Staff Union have proved abortive, however a fresh attempt is scheduled for the 13th of November 2015.”

“In the light of the progress made so far, ASUU should resume academic activities, because it is also not justifiable to receive salary while not working.

He urged the lecturers to keep in mind that they also have a responsibility to their students.
